Primary School Teacher Shot dead by Suspected Bandits
A tragic incident unfolded on Saturday, February 10, when a 55-year-old head teacher at Kagir Primary School in Baringo North, Thomas Kibet, was shot dead by suspected bandits. This shocking turn of events has once again highlighted the persistent issue of banditry in the region.
The incident took place as Kibet, along with his wife and child, was on their way to Kipcherere Secondary School for a function. They were ambushed by armed bandits in the Namba area, resulting in Kibet being shot in the head and losing his life instantly. His wife and child sustained injuries to their leg and hand, respectively.
Kibet’s tragic demise is made even more poignant by the fact that he had previously survived an attack by bandits when he was just nine years old. The bullet wounds he sustained at that time had left him blind. Despite this adversity, Kibet had dedicated his life to education, serving as a head teacher at Kagir Primary School.
The incident comes in the wake of another violent attack in Chesuman, Elgeyo Marakwet, where a police officer, Sergeant Anthony Mwangi, was shot and killed. Mwangi was gunned down as he walked to an outside latrine in the early hours of the morning. Two other officers present at the camp managed to escape unharmed.

These incidents serve as a grim reminder of the escalating banditry problem in the region. More than 20 lives have been lost in separate attacks in recent months, prompting urgent calls for action to address this menace.
In a separate incident last week, gunmen attacked and killed two people, including a member of the National Police Reservist, in Kaputir, Turkana County. The police reservist was escorting locals to a watering point when the group was ambushed. The bandits not only took the life of the police officer but also stole his rifle.
Another victim, Peter Lokuruka Ekai, aged 58, was shot in the head and left dead on the roadside in Turkana County. These senseless acts of violence continue to terrorize the local communities and demand immediate attention from the authorities.
