Tragedy Strikes as E-Rickshaw Driver Takes His Own Life Over House Tax Notice

An e-rickshaw driver in Lucknow has tragically taken his own life following a dispute with the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) over a house tax notice. The incident, which occurred in the Bazaar Khala area, has shocked the local community and raised concerns about the actions of the civic body.

The deceased has been identified as Sheetal Kashyap, who lived in the house with his brother Rajesh Kashyap. According to LMC records, the house belonged to the Kashyap brothers. On Saturday, a team from LMC Zone 6 visited the house and affixed a notice demanding the payment of Rs 57,000 in house tax. They also sealed a portion of the house by locking the gate.

Rajesh Kashyap, the brother of the deceased, was not present at the house when the LMC officials arrived. Upon his return, he was shocked to find the notice on the gate and the sealed portion of the house. However, despite the distressing situation, he did not engage with the officials and went inside the house.

Tragically, Sheetal Kashyap did not emerge from the house for quite some time, causing concern among his family members. When he failed to respond to their calls and did not open the door, they contacted the police. To their horror, Sheetal was discovered hanging from a peg on the wall, with a rope tied around his neck. The police immediately brought down the body and sent it for autopsy, as reported by news agency IANS.

The locals in the area have accused the LMC officials of driving Sheetal to suicide through their “appalling and insensitive behavior.” They claim that the officials ignored their pleas not to seal the part of the house where Sheetal had parked his e-rickshaw, which was his sole source of income. Outraged by the incident, they are demanding that a case of murder be filed against the officials.

However, the LMC officials have denied any involvement in the sealing of the house and have stated that they were simply following routine procedures by serving notices to defaulters in the area. They maintain that they had no role in Sheetal’s tragic decision to end his own life.

The Bazaar Khala police station has received a complaint from Rajesh Kashyap, and the allegations against the LMC officials are currently under investigation. This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder of the importance of compassion and understanding in dealing with citizens’ financial matters..
