Man Arrested After Fatally Shooting Woman and Injuring Children in Bronx

A man has been taken into custody after allegedly shooting a woman to death and injuring two children in a tragic incident that occurred in the Bronx on Saturday morning.

The incident took place at an apartment building located at the intersection of East 203rd Street and Valentine Avenue, where officers responded to a report of an assault at approximately 5 a.m.

Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered a woman who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to her torso, a 16-year-old boy who had been shot in the buttocks, and a 9-year-old boy who had been shot in the arm.

All three victims were promptly transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Unfortunately, the woman, identified as 40-year-old Saida Xiomara Bonilla Mejia, succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.

The two children, who are reported to be Bonilla’s nephews, are currently in stable condition and are expected to recover. police have stated that they were not the intended targets of the attack.

According to witnesses, the shooting followed a heated argument, leaving neighbors in complete shock and disbelief.

A resident in the building expressed their shock, saying, “I never thought someone would shoot in my building. I’ve been here for seven years, and this is another thing that shocked me.”

The suspect, 37-year-old Rosvin A. Mejia Castillo, was arrested in connection with the shooting. He is now facing several charges, including murder, attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon, and endangering the welfare of a child.

A Tragic Loss and a Troubled Relationship

Devastated loved ones, including Bonilla’s younger brother Kalvin Mejia-Reyes, gathered at the apartment to mourn her loss.

Describing Bonilla as a person who was well-liked by everyone, Mejia-Reyes expressed his grief, saying, “She was cool with everybody, like she didn’t deserve that. She passed away.”

Mejia-Reyes revealed that Bonilla had confided in him about the abusive nature of her relationship with Mejia Castillo, her boyfriend of two years.

“When he was living with my sister, nobody came to my sister’s house because of him,” he shared.

Family members disclosed that Bonilla had returned home late on Friday night, only to be confronted by Mejia Castillo waiting for her in the hallway of her apartment.

“I don’t have words to express how bad I feel because I was not here to protect my sister,” Mejia-Reyes lamented. “He was ready for her, waiting for her, just to kill her.”

A Talented Immigrant with a Promising Future

Bonilla’s family remembers her as an exceptional cook and a gifted hairstylist. She immigrated to the United States from Honduras approximately ten years ago in search of a better life.

This heartbreaking incident has left the community in mourning, as they remember Bonilla as a vibrant and kind-hearted individual whose life was tragically cut short.
