Tragedy Strikes at Annual Water-Skiing Race: Luke Wentworth Identified as Victim

A major annual water-skiing race on the Murray River near the Victoria-NSW border took a tragic turn today when a participant lost his life. The man has been identified as 40-year-old Luke Wentworth, who was competing with team Gasso in the Southern 80 race. Wentworth, a beloved figure, was the owner of the team and will be deeply missed.

During the race, Wentworth was water-skiing behind a speedboat when tragedy struck. As the boat turned a sharp corner, he crashed into a tree. Emergency services from both sides of the border rushed to the scene near Perricoota Road in Moama, but sadly, Wentworth could not be revived and was declared dead.

The news of the accident sent shockwaves through the thousands of spectators lining the Murray River, eagerly awaiting the speedboats to come around the bend. Madison Collins, one of the onlookers, recounted the moment they received the devastating news: “Sitting on the bank and a boat hadn’t come past for a while. And then we got a call and we heard that one of the boats had crashed.”

Event organizers made the difficult decision to cancel the race as the police launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Wentworth’s death. Moama Water Sports Club President Steve Shipp expressed the club’s cooperation with the authorities, stating, “As a ski racing family, we are here to support the affected family and team members as well as the wider ski racing community in this terribly sad time.”

This unfortunate incident marks the seventh death during the Southern 80 race since 1987. NSW Police Chief Inspector Paul Huggett expressed his condolences and praised Wentworth’s team for their efforts to help him. He emphasized that such incidents are a tragedy that affects the entire community.
