Man Identified After Being Shot by Police in Washington, DC

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has revealed the identity of the man who was shot by police on February 9th after pulling out a firearm and appearing to discharge it. The incident occurred during a patrol in support of Operation THRIVE1 in the Southeast area of Washington, DC.

At approximately 6:20 p.m., officers approached a man in a courtyard on Bangor Street and attempted to engage in conversation. However, the man quickly fled the scene and sought refuge in a nearby alley.

Undeterred, the officers pursued the suspect into the alley, where he brandished a gun and fired at least one round. In response, the officers defended themselves by returning fire and successfully striking the man.

The injured suspect was immediately transported to a local hospital for treatment. Fortunately, his injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening.

Authorities have identified the individual as 35-year-old Kenneth Coleman, a resident of Southeast, DC. Following the incident, Coleman was placed under arrest on multiple charges, including Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, Carrying a Pistol Without a License, Possession of an Unregistered Firearm, and Possession of Unregistered Ammunition.

Law enforcement officials were able to recover the suspect’s firearm at the scene, providing crucial evidence for their investigation.

In accordance with MPD policy, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave. Furthermore, their body-worn cameras were activated during the encounter, and the footage captured will be released in compliance with District of Columbia law.
