The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has made a major breakthrough in the investigation into the 2022 ISIS-inspired Coimbatore car bomb blast and ISIS radicalisation and recruitment case. Following raids at 21 locations across Tamil Nadu, four individuals have been arrested, according to officials.

During the searches conducted by the anti-terror agency, a significant amount of evidence was seized. This includes six laptops, 25 mobile phones, 34 SIM cards, six SD cards, and three hard discs, among other items.

The focus of the raids was on the Madras Arabic College and Kovai Arabic College, where individuals were clandestinely radicalising vulnerable youth under the guise of Arabic language classes. NIA investigations have revealed that radicalisation also took place through social media platforms and mobile applications such as WhatsApp and Telegram.

“The ISIS operatives were using the classes and social media to impart radical sermons to propagate Khilafat and ISIS ideologies inimical to India’s constitutionally established principles of secularism and democracy,” said the NIA.

It has also been discovered that the same suspects had links to the Coimbatore car bomb blast that occurred in October 2022. The NIA investigations further revealed that ten individuals arrested in connection with the blast had been associated with the Kovai Arabic College.

In addition to the raids conducted at the Arabic colleges, NIA teams simultaneously carried out searches at ten other locations connected to the car bomb blast case. These locations were linked to suspects who were part of an encrypted mobile platform group where discussions about ISIS activities and prospects were taking place.

The suspects and accused individuals were found to have eulogised Zahran Hashim, the deceased Sri Lankan terrorist responsible for orchestrating the PBIED attack in Colombo in 2019. Their aim was to establish the foothold of the ISIS outfit in India.

The four individuals arrested following the raids have been identified as Jameel Basha Umari, Maulvi Hussain Faizy alias Mohammed Hussain Faizy, Irshath, and Syed Abdur Rahman Umari. They were linked to the Madras Arabic College and were involved in promoting fundamentalism, extremism, and radicalisation.

One of the arrested individuals, Syed Abdur Rahman Umari, was found to be in possession of incriminating literature connected to ISIS. He had also been propagating the tenets of ISIS to the accused connected with the Coimbatore car bomb blast case through secret communications.

The investigations into both the TN ISIS Radicalisation and Recruitment Case and the Coimbatore car bomb blast case are ongoing, according to the NIA.
