COCHECTON- Policing in rural areas can present unique challenges, but for Sullivan County Sheriff Mike Schiff, maintaining a high degree of accessibility is one of the best ways to protect the 78,000 residents of his jurisdiction. In an effort to connect with members of the community and hear their concerns, Schiff, along with Undersheriff Eric Chaboty and several deputies, hosted a “Coffee with the Sheriff” event on Saturday at the Heinles General Store in Cochecton.

Covering an expansive 997 square miles, Sullivan County is home to a tight-knit community. Sheriff Schiff understands the importance of having a regular presence in every small town and village throughout the county. The event provided an opportunity for residents to interact with law enforcement officials in a relaxed and informal setting.

Holly G., a Sullivan County resident, expressed her gratitude for Sheriff Schiff’s accessibility, stating, “I think that the residents of Sullivan should thank their lucky stars that they have such an accessible and warm-hearted man as sheriff in the county.” Another attendee, Bob Fix, became emotional as he spoke about his appreciation for the hard work of the sheriff’s deputies. “I feel blessed and honored to show love and appreciation for the hard work they do,” said Fix. “They always put themselves out there.”

The owner of Heinles General Store, Bizay Singh, was honored to host the event and viewed it as a service to the community. “I really feel very grateful, and I really welcome the sheriff’s department here in the general store,” Singh said. “I appreciate that they are coming to help the community around Cochecton.”

The “Coffee with the Sheriff” event not only provided an opportunity for community members to engage with law enforcement, but it also offered some savings for residents. Singh reduced the price of regular gas to $2.99 per gallon during the event, providing a small economic benefit to both regular customers and attendees.

Sheriff Schiff remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of every resident in Sullivan County. By making himself accessible to the community and actively listening to their concerns, he continues to build trust and maintain a strong connection with the people he serves.
