Pilot and Co-Pilot Identified as Victims in Tragic Florida Plane Crash
In a devastating turn of events, a fiery plane crash on a Florida highway has claimed the lives of two individuals. The Collier County Sheriff’s Office has identified the pilot as Edward Daniel Murphy, aged 50, and the co-pilot as Ian Frederick Hofmann, 65. Both men tragically lost their lives in the crash.
The private jet, with a total of five people on board, was en route to Naples airport when it encountered a critical situation. The pilot calmly communicated to the airport controller that the aircraft had lost both engines and was unable to make it to the runway. Moments later, the jet attempted an emergency landing on Interstate 75.
Eyewitnesses at the scene report that the plane collided with a vehicle, its wing dragging the car before crashing into a wall. The impact caused a violent explosion, with flames and black smoke billowing into the sky. Sadly, two people lost their lives in the crash, according to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office.

Federal authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, which occurred near Naples, just north of the interstate’s eastward stretch towards Fort Lauderdale, known as Alligator Alley. The plane had departed from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, and was scheduled to land in Naples when the pilot contacted the tower for an emergency landing.
The air traffic controller acknowledged the pilot’s request and cleared the aircraft for landing. However, the pilot calmly informed them that the plane would not be able to reach the runway due to the loss of both engines. Tragically, contact with the tower was lost, and airport workers soon spotted the smoke rising from the crash site.
Emergency response teams swiftly arrived at the scene, rescuing three of the five individuals on board from the wreckage. The survivors, including crew member Sydney Ann Bosmans, 23, and passengers Aaron Baker, 35, and Audra Green, 23, were promptly transported to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries. At present, their conditions remain unknown.
The aircraft involved in the crash was operated by Hop-a-Jet Worldwide Charter, based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Hop-a-Jet has expressed their concern for the well-being of the passengers, crew members, and their families, stating that they are sending a team to the crash site for further investigation.
As the investigation continues, federal authorities have indicated that a preliminary report on the cause of the crash can be expected within 30 days. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and loved ones of the victims during this difficult time.
