A tragic plane crash on Interstate 75 near Naples, Florida has claimed the lives of two individuals identified as Edward Daniel Murphy, a 50-year-old pilot, and co-pilot Ian Frederick Hofmann, 65, according to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office. The fiery crash occurred on Friday afternoon, with three survivors, including crew member Sydney Ann Bosmans, 23, and passengers Aaron Baker, 35, and Audra Green, 23, all of Columbus, Ohio. The survivors were rushed to a local hospital for treatment, but their current conditions remain unknown.

The incident unfolded when the private jet, with five people on board, lost both engines mid-flight. In a calm exchange with an airport controller, the pilot conveyed that the aircraft wouldn’t be able to make it to the runway. Moments later, the plane attempted an emergency landing on Interstate 75 but collided with a vehicle, with the wing of the aircraft dragging the car before crashing into a wall. This collision caused an explosion, resulting in smoke and flames billowing from the scene.

The Collier County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that two fatalities occurred as a result of the crash. Federal authorities have since launched an investigation into the incident, focusing on the circumstances surrounding the crash and its causes.

The ill-fated flight had departed from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, and was en route to Naples when the emergency situation unfolded. The Naples Airport Authority spokesperson, Robin King, revealed that the pilot had contacted the tower to request an emergency landing. Despite the air traffic controller’s clearance, the pilot calmly informed them that both engines had failed. Shortly after, contact was lost, and airport workers witnessed the plumes of smoke emanating from the crash site a few miles away.
