Two individuals tragically lost their lives on Friday after a plane crashed near a Florida highway. The victims have been identified as 50-year-old Edward Daniel Murphy, the pilot of the plane, and 65-year-old Ian Fredrick Hofmann, the co-pilot, according to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred when the plane, which had departed from OSU’s airport in Columbus, Ohio, crashed near I-75 Southbound in Collier County, approximately 46 miles southeast of Naples, Florida, around 3:15 pm.
The aircraft was just a few miles away from the runway when it crashed onto the highway, colliding with a vehicle. Fortunately, the truck driver involved sustained only minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, as reported by NBC affiliate WBBH.
Out of the five individuals on board the plane, two sadly lost their lives, while the remaining three were hospitalized due to their injuries. This devastating incident prompted Ian Hofmann’s family to start a GoFundMe page in his memory. The page, created by his son Chris, aims to honor his father’s heroic actions in the face of a desperate emergency. Ian, with over 40 years and 25,000 hours of flying experience with Piedmont, USAirways, Virgin America, and Hopajet, was described as the “ultimate professional pilot.”
The GoFundMe campaign has already raised $10,200 of its $15,000 goal, showcasing the outpouring of support from friends, family, and well-wishers. In a statement released by Hofmann’s family, they expressed their shock and devastation but also conveyed their gratitude for the overwhelming support they have received. They also requested prayers during this difficult time.

An audio recording capturing the final moments before the crash has been released to the public. The chilling recording features the pilot’s distress call to the control tower, stating the loss of both engines and the need for an emergency landing. Unfortunately, the audio abruptly ends, leaving behind the harrowing silence that followed.
The National Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating the crash to determine the cause of this devastating incident.
