A man named Craig Sturt has been charged after allegedly boarding a flight from London to New York without possessing a ticket or passport. The incident has raised concerns about airport security and has prompted a full investigation.

According to reports from The Sun, Sturt managed to bypass security checkpoints and passport control at Heathrow Airport without presenting any documents. He then boarded a British Airways flight bound for New York. However, upon arrival at JFK airport on Christmas day at 8pm, he was apprehended and sent back to the UK.

Sturt, who is 46 years old, has been charged with fraud and offenses under the Aviation Security Act. Court records indicate that he gained access to the airside area of Heathrow’s Terminal 5 and boarded the aircraft, a Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner, without having paid for a ticket.

Both British Airways and Heathrow Airport have pledged their full cooperation with the ongoing investigation. A spokesperson for British Airways stated, “We are assisting the authorities with their investigation,” while Heathrow Airport affirmed, “We are supporting the authorities with their ongoing investigation.”

Following his arrest in the UK on Christmas Day, Sturt was charged with obtaining services by deception, being unlawfully airside, and boarding an aircraft without permission. However, he failed to appear for his scheduled sentencing in January, prompting a warrant for his arrest.

Thames Valley police initially handled the case after Sturt was reported missing on January 25, but the Metropolitan Police took over the investigation on January 31.

In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said, “On 24 December 2023, police were made aware of an alleged breach of security at Heathrow Airport, and a male was subsequently arrested and later charged with fraud and Aviation Security Act offences.”

The incident has highlighted the need for continued review and enhancement of security measures at airports. The authorities are working with all their partners to ensure robust security measures are in place to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The investigation into this breach of security at Heathrow Airport continues, and further details are expected to emerge as the case progresses..
