A 15-Year-Old Arrested and Charged as an Adult in Times Square Shooting

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested and charged as an adult following a shooting incident in Times Square that left a Brazilian tourist injured. The New York police Department has confirmed that the teenager, who is originally from Venezuela and entered the United States last September, is facing multiple charges, including attempted murder and possession of a weapon.

The shooting took place at a sneaker store called JD Sports, where the suspect was confronted by a security guard. The guard asked the teenager to produce a receipt for a jacket he had in his bag. However, instead of complying, the boy reached into his coat and fired a shot, accidentally hitting a 37-year-old woman from Brazil who was visiting New York.

A foot chase then ensued through Times Square, during which the suspect fired two more shots at pursuing police officers. Remarkably, the officers showed great restraint and did not return fire, as the area was crowded with pedestrians.

Police were able to apprehend the teenage suspect in Yonkers the following day, thanks to a lead provided by a possible family connection in the area.

NYPD Police Commissioner Edward Caban referred to the incident as “way beyond reckless” at a press conference. He emphasized that anyone who threatens the lives of those who keep the city safe will face severe consequences.

The teenage suspect is also believed to be involved in two other incidents in New York City last month. These include a gunpoint robbery in the Bronx and another shooting on 45th Street and Broadway.

In court, Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Kathleen Coulson argued for the suspect to be remanded due to his extreme flight risk and the seriousness of the charges against him.

The teenager is scheduled to appear in court again on February 13. CNN has reached out to his attorney for comment.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and innocent bystanders in one of the busiest and most highly-trafficked areas of New York City. The NYPD’s Chief of Patrol, John Chell, expressed gratitude for the officers’ restraint in not firing their weapons into the crowded streets. The investigation into the incident is ongoing..
