Uttarakhand Government Seeks Additional Paramilitary Forces to Control Law and Order Situation in Nainital Following Recent Violence

In a recent turn of events, the Uttarakhand government has requested four additional units of central paramilitary forces to aid in controlling the law and order situation in Banbhulpura, Nainital. The demand comes in the wake of violent clashes that erupted during an anti-encroachment operation led by the district administration.

Chief Secretary Radha Raturi, in a letter to the Union Home Secretary, highlighted the need for additional forces due to continuous attempts by anarchist elements to disrupt law and order in the area. The violence, which occurred on February 8, resulted in the loss of five lives and led to the imposition of a curfew in the affected region.

Senior Superintendent of police (SSP) PN Meena confirmed that three cases have been filed, with 19 individuals identified as suspects. An additional 5,000 unidentified individuals have also been included in the cases. The riots followed the demolition of an illegal madrassa in Haldwani, prompting a magisterial inquiry into the matter.

To prevent the spread of rumors and misinformation, internet services have been suspended in the town. Police are actively patrolling the affected areas, where streets remain empty and businesses and schools are closed.

Six individuals involved in the rioting lost their lives, while 60 others sustained injuries. The SSP clarified that no deaths occurred due to police firing, and post-mortem examinations will shed light on the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

So far, three FIRs have been registered, and five individuals have been arrested in connection with the violence. Additional Director General (ADG) of Police, Law and Order, A P Anshuman, stated that 16 individuals have been identified as suspects in the FIRs, with five already apprehended.

The situation in Banbhulpura, Nainital, is currently under control, with continuous patrolling by law enforcement agencies. The Uttarakhand government’s request for additional paramilitary forces aims to ensure the restoration of peace and stability in the area.
