15-Year-Old Arrested after Shooting Brazilian Tourist in Times Square Store

A 15-year-old boy has been taken into custody and charged as an adult after he shot and injured a Brazilian tourist at a store in Times Square. The New York police Department has revealed that the teenager, who is believed to be a migrant from Venezuela, entered the United States in September of last year. He now faces multiple charges, including attempted murder and assault.

The incident unfolded at JD Sports, a popular sneaker store in Times Square. Videos obtained by CNN show that it all started when a security guard approached the young suspect and asked him to produce a receipt for a jacket he had in his bag. However, things quickly escalated when the teenager reached into his coat and fired a shot, mistakenly hitting a 37-year-old Brazilian woman visiting New York.

A half-mile foot chase through Times Square ensued, with the suspect firing twice at the pursuing officer. Remarkably, the officer showed incredible restraint and did not return fire due to the crowded streets. NYPD’s Chief of Patrol, John Chell, commended the officer’s actions, stating, “Our cops showed great restraint not to fire their weapon into crowded New Yorkers.”

The shooting occurred just a block away from where police had previously confronted a group of men from a migrant shelter, resulting in a scuffle. NYPD Police Commissioner Edward Caban described the incident as “way beyond reckless” and emphasized that those who threaten the lives of the city’s law enforcement officers will face serious consequences.

The teenager, who is also suspected of being involved in a gunpoint robbery in the Bronx and firing a gun on 45th Street and Broadway, is considered an extreme flight risk. Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Kathleen Coulson has requested that he be remanded due to the severity of the charges.

The young suspect will next appear in court on February 13. CNN has reached out to his attorney for a comment on the case. In the meantime, authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident and the teenager’s alleged involvement in other crimes.

This tragic event serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by both law enforcement officers and innocent bystanders in the heart of New York City. The NYPD remains committed to keeping the city safe and ensuring that those who commit acts of violence are held accountable for their actions..
