Jose Vladimir Larin-Garcia, a 24-year-old man from California, has been sentenced to death for the murder of four people in Palm Springs five years ago. The sentencing, which was upheld by Riverside County Superior Court Judge Anthony Villalobos, comes after Larin-Garcia was originally convicted by a jury in February 2023.

The case, which has shocked the local community, involves the brutal killing of Carlos Campos-Rivera, 25, Yuliana Garcia, 17, Jacob Montgomery, 19, and Juan Duarte-Raya, 18. The victims were found with gunshot wounds to their heads, and Yuliana Garcia had a defensive wound on one of her hands.

The events leading up to the murders unfolded on February 3, 2019. Larin-Garcia was in a car with three of the victims when they met Campos-Rivera near his apartment complex on Canon Drive. Larin-Garcia shot Campos-Rivera twice, killing him instantly. As the car sped away, gunshots rang out, and the vehicle eventually crashed on Sunny Dunes Road.

Following the crash, Larin-Garcia was discovered hiding under a truck just two blocks away. Covered in the victims’ blood, he was later arrested while attempting to flee the state for Florida on a Greyhound bus.

After being charged with the murders, Larin-Garcia faced two trials. In the second trial, which concluded on February 6, 2023, he was found guilty of four counts of first-degree murder. Jurors also determined that he used a firearm to commit the crimes and assessed special circumstances of lying in wait and killing multiple victims. These special circumstances led to Larin-Garcia being sentenced to death.

However, it is worth noting that California has not executed a death row inmate since 2006. The state currently lacks the necessary protocols and has faced legal challenges regarding its use of the death penalty.

During the sentencing hearing, numerous victim impact statements were read, including a letter from the son of Carlos Campos-Rivera, who was just 10 years old when his father was murdered. The emotional impact of these statements was evident in the courtroom, with Judge Villalobos acknowledging the difficulty of the case and the lack of closure it can provide.

“The only thing I can do is what the law provides,” Judge Villalobos said before affirming the death sentence.

The sentencing of Jose Vladimir Larin-Garcia serves as a reminder of the heinous nature of these crimes and the devastating impact they have on the victims’ families and the community as a whole..
