Investigation Underway into Fatal Wrong-Way Crash in Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City police Department (SLCPD) is currently investigating a tragic wrong-way crash that occurred in the Poplar Grove neighborhood of Salt Lake City, resulting in the death of one individual and leaving two others hospitalized. The incident took place on Friday night and has left the community in shock.
The driver who tragically lost their life in the crash has been identified as Wilber Cardenas, a 19-year-old. The circumstances surrounding the collision are still under investigation, but preliminary findings suggest that Cardenas was driving north in the southbound lanes on South 5600 West. It is believed that he may have swerved before the crash, causing a collision with another vehicle involved in the incident.
Upon receiving a distress call about the crash, SLCPD promptly launched an investigation. Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered two cars, a red Kia and a silver Infiniti, both sustaining extensive damage. Cardenas’s vehicle was found overturned, while the other car had front-end damage.
Thanks to the swift response of the Salt Lake City Fire Department, the driver of the Kia was successfully rescued and transported to the hospital. Their injuries are reported to be non-life-threatening. Furthermore, the passenger of the Infiniti was also rescued by fire crews and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Tragically, Cardenas was trapped in his vehicle following the collision. Emergency officials at the scene made every effort to save his life, even requesting a helicopter for further medical assistance. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, Cardenas succumbed to his injuries on the scene.
