Virginia Military Institute Alum Identified as One of the Marines killed in Helicopter Crash

A former Virginia Military Institute (VMI) student has been identified as one of the five marines who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash in San Diego, California. Captain Jack Casey, a 2019 VMI graduate, was onboard the training flight when the accident occurred on Tuesday.

Casey, a native of New Hampshire, graduated from VMI with a major in physics. During his time at the institute, he showcased his leadership skills as the Company I commander for the 2018-19 academic year. His dedication and commitment to his classmates earned him the respect and admiration of all who knew him.

After graduating, Casey joined the Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, Marine Aircraft 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. In recognition of his exemplary service, he was promoted to the rank of Captain in September 2023 and received the National Defense Service Medal.

His former classmate and 2019 VMI Class President, Captain Eli Facemire, spoke fondly of Casey, saying, “Jack was absolutely loved by our class, and all our brother rats knew that Jack loved them. He made a positive impact on all, and we will cherish our memories of him forever.”

The helicopter involved in the crash was a CH-53E, the largest helicopter in the military, and was returning to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar from Creech Air Force Base when it went down. The search and rescue teams faced challenging weather conditions, with record levels of rain and snowfall in California. The wreckage was finally located at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

Efforts to recover the remains of the helicopter and investigate the cause of the crash are already underway, but marine officials have cautioned that the process may take several weeks to complete.

The loss of Captain Jack Casey and his fellow marines is a devastating blow to the VMI community and the entire nation. Their bravery and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
