Bombardier Challenger 600 Series Plane Involved in Multiple Fatal Crashes Since 2000

The Bombardier Challenger 600 series plane, similar to the one that crashed on Interstate 75 near Naples, Florida, on Friday, has been linked to several fatal accidents over the past two decades, according to a review by The Columbus Dispatch.

Tragically, two people lost their lives in Friday’s fiery crash, which occurred when a pilot from the private charter company Hop-A-Jet attempted an emergency landing at Naples airport. The pilot reported that the plane had lost both engines and would not be able to make it to the airport.

Shockingly, this crash marks at least the seventh fatal incident involving this series of Bombardier private jets since 2000, as reported by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Aviation Safety Network. While some of these accidents were attributed to issues with the aircraft itself, others were the result of pilot error or other factors, according to the reports.

Bombardier Inc., the Montreal-based private business jet manufacturer, was not available for comment regarding these crashes.

To shed light on the history of accidents involving the Bombardier Challenger 600 series, here are some notable incidents recorded by the NTSB and Aviation Safety Network:

  1. October 10, 2000: A Bombardier Challenger operated by Canadair Limited crashed in Wichita, Kansas during a test flight. The NTSB determined that pilot error, specifically “excessive takeoff rotation,” and a lack of operational oversight contributed to the crash, resulting in the loss of all three people on board.

  2. November 28, 2004: An Air Castle Corporation Bombardier CL-600 crashed during takeoff in Montrose, Colorado. Ice accumulation on the plane’s wings and the pilots’ lack of experience flying in winter weather conditions were identified as the causes of the crash. The pilot, co-pilot, and flight attendant lost their lives in the accident.

  3. January 5, 2014: A Bombardier CL-600 crashed during landing at Aspen airport in Colorado. One crew member died and two others sustained serious injuries. The NTSB report attributed the crash to the flight crew’s failure to maintain control of the aircraft during an unstable approach.

  4. March 11, 2018: A Bombardier Challenger 604 private jet crashed in the Zagros Mountains in Iran while returning from Dubai. Tragically, all eleven people on board lost their lives.

  5. May 5, 2019: A Canadair Challenger 601-3A crashed in the desert while en route from Las Vegas to Monterrey, Mexico. The pilots lost control of the plane due to a rapid climb, resulting in the deaths of two crew members and all 11 passengers.

  6. July 26, 2021: A Bombardier Challenger 605 jet crashed while approaching an airport in Truckee, California. The NTSB investigation revealed that the pilot and co-pilot attempted an “unstabilized approach” by making a sharp left turn towards the runway. The plane crashed into trees, caught fire, and tragically claimed the lives of all six people on board.

These incidents highlight the need for thorough investigations into the causes of these crashes and the implementation of safety measures to prevent future tragedies..
