Witness Tips Off Police Leading to Capture of Mail Thieves

In a recent incident in Turlock, two Stockton men were apprehended by the police with a staggering haul of over 400 stolen mail items. Thanks to the alertness of a witness, the suspects were caught in the act and their crime spree was brought to an end.

The witness, who happened to be at the Park Knolls Apartment complex on Pedras Road, noticed that the community mailbox had been broken into. Not only that, but they also spotted a vehicle leaving the complex at an unusually high speed. Wasting no time, the witness promptly dialed the police department at 8:47 a.m. on Tuesday to report the incident.

Providing the police dispatchers with a detailed description of the vehicle, driver, and passenger, the witness played a crucial role in aiding the authorities. Officer Martin Marquez, on his way to the apartment complex, spotted the vehicle and attempted to make a traffic stop. However, the driver, later identified as 25-year-old Michael Mascarenas from Stockton, refused to comply and instead accelerated away.

A dramatic pursuit ensued, with multiple officers joining the chase. The high-speed chase eventually came to an end when Mascarenas, in a desperate bid to evade the police, took the vehicle off the highway, only to render it inoperable. Both Mascarenas and his passenger, 20-year-old Angel Galvan, also from Stockton, fled from the vehicle but were quickly apprehended by the officers.

During a thorough search of the vehicle, law enforcement officers were shocked to discover over 400 pieces of stolen mail. Mascarenas, who had four warrants, one of which was for theft, was arrested and charged with evading, resisting arrest, possession of stolen mail, identity theft, and the outstanding warrants. Galvan, who was on probation for theft, was arrested and charged with resisting arrest and possession of stolen property.

Detectives are now working diligently to process the recovered mail and will be contacting the rightful recipients to return their stolen possessions. In the meantime, the Turlock Police Department is urging residents to check their mailboxes regularly and stay vigilant against mail theft. They recommend signing up for the United States Postal Service’s Informed Delivery service, which provides scanned images of incoming mail to help identify any missing items or suspicious activities.

If you have fallen victim to mail theft or have concerns about the security of your community mailbox, it is crucial to report the incident to both the Turlock Police Department and the USPS Postal Inspectors. By working together, we can help put an end to these criminal activities and protect our communities.
