Man Bound Over for Trial in Hit-and-Run Case Resulting in Death of 19-Year-Old Woman
In a tragic incident that occurred on December 31, a hit-and-run crash in Fond du Lac County resulted in the death of 19-year-old Taya Grimes. Now, Jatziel Encarnacion, a 19-year-old man from West Bend, has been bound over for trial on a single count of hit-and-run causing great bodily harm.
According to prosecutors, witnesses at the scene stated that Encarnacion hit Grimes with his car, but he is not charged in her death. The crash took place just after 1 a.m. when a silver Chevrolet struck a culvert and rolled over multiple times. The vehicle had five occupants, and four of them were ejected during the crash.
Grimes, who was identified as the driver of the Chevrolet, sadly did not survive the accident. The other occupants, including a 17-year-old male who suffered critical injuries, a 16-year-old female with serious non-life threatening injuries, a 17-year-old with minor injuries, and a 21-year-old with serious non-life threatening injuries, were all transported to various hospitals for treatment.

The investigation revealed that Encarnacion’s red Mazda was seen passing through the crash site, hitting Grimes and another victim. Witnesses reported that Encarnacion’s car briefly stopped before driving away. Encarnacion later turned himself in to the West Bend police Department and admitted to being at an underage drinking party near Kewaskum the night before the crash. He confirmed that he had been drinking but denied providing alcohol to others.
When questioned about the crash, Encarnacion admitted to driving through the crash site and striking an object in the road, describing it as going over a speed bump. A search of his vehicle uncovered signs of blood and hair, as well as exterior damage on all sides.
Although Encarnacion is not charged in Grimes’ death, Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney explained the difficulty of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt when the exact cause of the victim’s injuries cannot be determined.
As the trial date approaches, the community mourns the loss of a young life and hopes for justice to be served in this heartbreaking case..
