A 15-Year-Old Boy Arrested Following Midtown Manhattan Shooting

A 15-year-old boy was swiftly captured by law enforcement in Yonkers, just a day after allegedly opening fire in Midtown Manhattan. The incident, which occurred on Thursday night, caused great concern among the residents of New York City.

The suspect, whose identity is being withheld due to his status as a minor, was apprehended on Friday at 106 Saratoga Ave. by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Recovery Task Force, around 3:30 p.m. This arrest came as a result of an intensive investigation that relied on a combination of video evidence, canvassing efforts, forensics, ballistic recovery, and witness testimonies.

NYPD officials, led by Assistant Chief of Detectives Bureau Jason Savino, applauded the meticulous gathering of evidence, which played a crucial role in identifying and apprehending the alleged shooter. Savino highlighted the collaborative effort involved, stating, “We literally spoke to hundreds of individuals.”

The teenager, believed to be from Venezuela and residing in a migrant shelter on West 70th Street, stands accused of carrying out the shooting in Times Square using a .45 caliber handgun. The incident took place during a confrontation inside a retail store, where the suspects were allegedly attempting to steal merchandise.

During the altercation, the suspect allegedly fired his weapon, hitting a tourist from Brazil in the leg. The victim, identified as 38-year-old Taliele Ribeiro Lemos, shared her harrowing experience, expressing shock and fear at the unexpected violence in a city she had always considered safe.

Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene, prompting a pursuit by law enforcement officers. Despite the serious nature of the situation, officers exercised restraint and did not return fire due to the presence of bystanders.

Authorities have revealed that the apprehended teenager is also a suspect in a prior armed robbery in the Bronx, as well as another shooting incident in Midtown. The investigation is ongoing as detectives work to determine the involvement of two other individuals, who are also Venezuelan nationals and were apprehended alongside the primary suspect.

Despite the alarming incident, NYPD officials sought to reassure the public, emphasizing that New York City remains one of the safest urban centers worldwide.
