Man Crushed to Death by Wild Elephant in Kerala’s Padamala
Chaos erupted in Padamala, a village near Wayanad’s Mananthavady in Kerala, when a radio-collared wild elephant went on a rampage, resulting in the tragic death of a man. The incident occurred on Saturday morning when the tusker entered a human settlement and chased down Panachiyil Aji, a 42-year-old resident of Payyampalli.
The horrifying incident took place around 6 am, leaving Aji critically injured. He was immediately rushed to Mananthavady Medical College, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.
CCTV footage of the incident captured the terrifying moment when the wild elephant, equipped with a radio collar, broke through the compound wall of a house and attacked Aji as he desperately tried to seek refuge in a residential compound. Despite the homeowner opening a gate to aid his escape, the elephant stormed through, trampling Aji to death before retreating into the nearby forested area.

The tragedy has sparked outrage among locals, who are demanding a meeting with the district collector to address the issue. The incident has also caused a heated dispute between the forest departments of Karnataka and Kerala. The elephant in question was reportedly radio collared by the Karnataka Forest Department, with Kerala Forest Department officials claiming they received no information about the elephant’s presence in their territory, which is densely populated by humans.
As a result of the public’s protest, a curfew has been imposed in Mananthawadi. Angry residents have taken to the streets, blocking the Mananthavady-Mysore, Mananthavady-Kozhikode, and Thalassery roads, demanding justice and accountability from the forest department for failing to issue any warning about the presence of the elephant.
Expressing his shock at the man’s death, Kerala Forest Minister AK Saseendran emphasized the urgent need to address the escalating issue of man-animal conflicts. The frequent occurrence of such incidents has become a matter of concern, highlighting the need for effective measures to protect both humans and wildlife in the region.
