Wild Elephant Kills Man in Kerala’s Wayanad District
A tragic incident occurred in Kerala’s Wayanad district when a radio-collared wild elephant strayed into a residential area and trampled a man to death. The victim, Panachiyil Ajeesh, a 47-year-old farmer and driver from Mananthavady, was chased by the elephant before seeking refuge in a house. However, the elephant broke down the gate and attacked Ajeesh, resulting in his untimely demise.
The news of Ajeesh’s death sparked outrage among the local community, leading to protests and a standstill in the town of Mananthavady. The residents expressed their frustration with the alleged inaction of forest and revenue officials in dealing with the elephant’s presence in the region. As a result, prohibitory orders were imposed in four divisions under the Mananthavady municipality.
CCTV footage captured the terrifying moment when Ajeesh attempted to escape the elephant by jumping over a closed gate. Unfortunately, the elephant managed to break through the gate and wall, entering the premises and trampling Ajeesh to death. Locals rushed Ajeesh to the district hospital, but their efforts were in vain.

The captured and radio-collared elephant had been released in a forest bordering Kerala by the Karnataka forest department in November 2023. Forest Minister A K Saseendran assured the public that necessary measures would be taken to tranquilize the elephant. However, delays occurred due to disruptions in receiving signals from the radio collar.
The incident has raised questions about the effectiveness of forest officials in addressing the issue of wild animals entering residential areas. Ramesh Chennithala, a senior Congress leader, criticized the government’s handling of the situation, highlighting the need for improved measures to protect the community. He also called for a compensation of Rs 50 lakh for the victim’s family.
This is not the first time a radio-collared wild elephant has caused panic in the region. Just two weeks ago, another elephant had strayed into Mananthavady town, leading to a temporary state of fear among the residents. Although that elephant was successfully tranquilized and transferred to Bandipur forest, it unfortunately died soon after.
The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by both humans and wildlife in coexisting peacefully. It calls for a comprehensive approach to wildlife management to ensure the safety of individuals while respecting the natural habitat of these magnificent creatures..
