Wild Elephant Breaks Gate and Attacks Man in Kerala’s Wayanad: Tragic Incident Unfolds

A horrifying incident unfolded in Kerala’s Wayanad district as a radio-collared wild elephant broke into a residential area, broke the gate of a house, and chased a 42-year-old man, ultimately attacking him to death. The victim has been identified as Padamala Panachiyil Aji, a resident of the Mananthavady region. The entire incident was captured on surveillance cameras, leaving the locals in shock and triggering protests in the area.

The video footage shows the elephant running towards the house, causing panic among the residents. With sheer force, the elephant breaks through the gate and fence of the house, relentlessly chasing the man before trampling him to death. The distressing images have left the community devastated and questioning the safety measures taken by the forest department.

Kerala’s forest minister, AK Saseendran, expressed his concern over the incident and stated that the victim was attacked after the wild elephant ventured into the residential area. He immediately directed the district collector and police chief to take necessary action to tranquilize the tusker. The minister also emphasized the importance of discussing the situation with local body representatives to ensure the safety of the residents.

Adding to the alarming situation, the Kerala forest department revealed that a tusker with a radio collar, fitted by the Karnataka forest department, was spotted in the Wayanad forest area just two days prior to the incident. Locals have alleged that despite the confirmation of the elephant’s presence, the forest department failed to take any preventive measures to keep it away from residential areas.

This tragic incident comes just a week after another rogue tusker, Thanneer Komban, was sighted in Mananthavadi. Although efforts were made to tranquilize and capture the tusker, it unfortunately succumbed to its injuries. The recurring presence of wild elephants in residential areas has raised concerns among the locals, who are demanding stronger measures to protect their lives and properties.

The unfortunate demise of Padamala Panachiyil Aji has left a void in the hearts of his loved ones. A resident of the Mananthavady region, Aji was a hardworking individual known for his kindness and dedication to his family. As the community mourns his loss, they are also determined to seek justice and prevent such tragic incidents from happening in the future.

In conclusion, this shocking development in Kerala’s Wayanad district serves as a reminder of the ongoing human-wildlife conflict in the region. As authorities work towards finding a sustainable solution, it is crucial for residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety in the face of such unforeseen encounters..
