The Marine Corps Releases the Names of Five Heroes killed in Helicopter Crash
The Marine Corps has identified the five Marines who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash during a historic storm near San Diego. These decorated Marines, all in their 20s, were assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, and were based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

The youngest of the group was Lance Cpl. Donovan Davis, a 21-year-old from Olathe, Kansas. Davis had recently been promoted to the rank of lance corporal on New Year’s Day. Capt. Miguel Nava, 28, from Traverse City, Michigan, was the oldest among them.
Nava, a graduate of Comstock Park High School near Grand Rapids, had attended the U.S. Naval Academy and was known for his dedication to helping and mentoring his fellow students. The school district expressed their admiration for Nava, stating that he exemplified what it meant to be a Panther.
Sgt. Alec Langen, 23, from Chandler, Arizona, and Davis both served as crew chiefs on the ill-fated helicopter. The remaining two Marines, Capt. Jack Casey, 26, from Dover, New Hampshire, and Capt. Benjamin Moulton, 27, from Emmett, Idaho, were experienced CH-53E pilots.
The Super Stallion helicopter disappeared on its way back to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar from Creech Air Force Base. The wreckage was discovered the following morning near Pine Valley, a mountain community. The military confirmed that all five Marines lost their lives in the crash, and efforts are underway to recover their remains, a process that will be challenging due to the difficult terrain and weather conditions.

Col. James C. Ford, operations officer with 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, stated that the military is currently investigating the cause of the crash. Meanwhile, Marines are standing vigil with the fallen heroes, keeping their promise to never leave a Marine behind.
The loss of these brave individuals is a devastating blow to their families, friends, and the Marine Corps community. Lt. Col. Nicholas J. Harvey, commanding officer of Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, expressed his sorrow, stating, “We have been confronted with a tragedy that is every service family’s worst fear. The Flying Tigers family stands strong, and we will get through this together.”.
