A Florida man was arrested on Thursday after making an emergency landing at a Half Moon Bay beach in California. The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a small aircraft landing near or on the beach around 5 p.m. Deputies quickly arrived at the scene and discovered a single-engine airplane nose-down on the sand. Remarkably, the plane was unoccupied and intact.

Shortly after, deputies detained a 50-year-old man from Miami who matched the description of a person seen walking away from the aircraft. The man, identified as Luiz Gustavo Aires, was taken into custody without incident. No injuries were reported during the incident.

Further investigation revealed that the airplane had been stolen from the Palo Alto Airport. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the stolen aircraft was an American Champion Citabria 150. The pilot, who happened to be the only person aboard, is a flight instructor based in Palo Alto. The aircraft is registered to a San Mateo resident.

Aires was subsequently booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City on suspicion of airplane theft. The authorities have not yet disclosed how Aires gained access to the plane, and officials from Palo Alto Airport have not provided any immediate response to inquiries.
