Unearthed Footage Shows Jan. 6 Rioter Firing Gun Outside Capitol

Newly released footage from the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack has revealed a shocking development. The video appears to show a rioter firing a gun into the air during the chaotic scene outside the Capitol building. This individual has been identified as John Emanuel Banuelos, who was previously featured in an NBC News story almost two years ago.

Online sleuths, who have been instrumental in aiding the prosecution of hundreds of individuals involved in the January 6 riots, have identified Banuelos as the same man they reported to the FBI three years ago. The footage and photographs from that day clearly show Banuelos with what appears to be a gun in his waistband. In fact, Banuelos himself admitted to being at the Capitol and captured on film with a gun when questioned by Salt Lake City police.

Surprisingly, Banuelos has not been arrested or charged in connection with the January 6 attack. However, he was arrested by Salt Lake City police in relation to the fatal stabbing of Christopher Thomas Senn in a park on July 4, 2021. Banuelos claimed self-defense in Senn’s death, and the Salt Lake City District Attorney’s office chose not to pursue a case against him.

The newly discovered footage, released by another participant in the January 6 riots, shows Banuelos firing the gun into the air twice on the west side of the Capitol. This is the first known instance of a rioter firing a gun during the events of that day. The shots were fired at 2:34 p.m., just minutes before Ashli Babbitt was shot and killed by a Capitol officer.

Contrary to false claims made by conservative media figures, numerous defendants involved in the January 6 attack were armed with deadly weapons. This includes individuals such as Christopher Alberts, Mark Mazza, and Guy Reffitt, who were all convicted and sentenced for carrying firearms during the assault on the Capitol.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, which has been handling the cases of more than 1,250 January 6 rioters, has not yet commented on whether there will be a criminal case against Banuelos. Banuelos himself has not responded to requests for comment.

It is important to note that Banuelos has a history of sending threatening messages to online sleuths who investigate the January 6 attack. Some of the videos he has sent contain implied threats, with Banuelos holding a gun. These disturbing messages have been reported to authorities and were featured in a recent segment on PBS.

The release of this new footage further highlights the violent and dangerous nature of the January 6 attack. Investigations into the events of that day continue, and it is hoped that all those responsible for the violence and destruction will be held accountable..
