A shocking incident unfolded in bustling Times Square as a 15-year-old migrant was charged with attempted murder after allegedly firing a gun at a security guard and NYPD officers, injuring a tourist in the process. The accused, Jesus Alejandro Rivas-Figueroa, appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court on Saturday and was set to be arraigned in a suspected robbery gone wrong.

Rivas-Figueroa is facing serious charges, including two counts of attempted murder, assault, attempted assault, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. He was photographed in the same dark T-shirt and jeans he was wearing during his arrest, entering court with a scowl on his face and his hands cuffed behind his back. When asked if he spoke English, he shook his head no and refused to answer further questions.

The joint efforts of the US Marshals Joint Regional Fugitive Task Force and the NYPD led to the arrest of this “armed and dangerous” Venezuelan teen in Yonkers. Rivas-Figueroa was taken into custody at a relative’s home on Saratoga Avenue, causing him to weep during the process.

This incident comes after Rivas-Figueroa’s arrival in the US in September, where he had been staying at a temporary shelter at the Stratford Hotel on West 70th Street. He is also a suspect in a January 25 shooting incident in Midtown and a January 27 gunpoint robbery in the Bronx.

According to the police, Rivas-Figueroa and two other teens, who were also migrants and attended school together, attempted to shoplift from JD Sports, a sports-fashion retail store on West 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue. When they were stopped by a security guard, Rivas-Figueroa allegedly pulled out a large .45-caliber handgun and fired at the guard and into a crowd.

While the guard was unharmed, a 38-year-old Brazilian tourist, Tatiele Riberio, who was waiting in line to buy sneakers and texting her husband, was struck in the leg. As chaos ensued, Rivas-Figueroa and another 15-year-old boy fled the scene. Rivas-Figueroa allegedly fired at an NYPD officer as he ran away.

Video footage captured Rivas-Figueroa and the other teen running from the store. The area was quickly flooded with patrolling officers, resulting in one of the teens being apprehended while the other continued to run. The suspect then reportedly entered the 47th–50th Streets–Rockefeller Center subway station, where he momentarily disappeared before emerging and escaping onto the street.

The injured shopper received 13 stitches at Bellevue Hospital and was released. She is expected to return to Brazil on Saturday.

This shocking incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can unfold in the heart of a bustling city, and the swift actions of law enforcement in apprehending the suspect demonstrate their dedication to keeping the public safe. The court proceedings will shed further light on the details surrounding this tragic event..
