Arrested and Detained: Delta State Police Confirm Detention of Officers Involved in Shooting of Vigilante Commander and Two Others

The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest and detention of the policemen who allegedly shot a Vigilante Commander and two members of the Idjerhe Kingdom’s vigilante group. The incident occurred on the 30th of January, 2024, in Jesse town, the traditional headquarters of Idjerhe Kingdom.

Mr Freeborn Ofeshohwo, popularly known as Cornerstone, the Vigilante Commander, along with Friday Johnson and Enor Young, were shot by the detained officers. The shooting sparked public outcry, leading to the intervention of the state commissioner of police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi.

In a statement issued by the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, CP Olufemi condemned the shooting and assured the people of Idjerhe Kingdom that a thorough investigation would be conducted. The statement, titled “Re-Protest, Anger As Policemen Shoot Idjerhe Kingdom Vigilante Leaders And Two Others: CP Abaniwonda Olufemi Condemns The Act, Orders The Detention Of The Officers Involved, And SCID To Commence A Full-Scale Investigation,” was released on Friday.

The commissioner of police directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police State Criminal Investigation Department to initiate a full-scale investigation into the incident. The officers involved have been identified and detained, and internal disciplinary action has been initiated.

CP Olufemi emphasized that such conduct by officers of the command would not be tolerated, and the officers concerned would be dealt with according to the extant laws as stipulated in the Police Act and regulations. He warned all officers and men of the command against unprofessionalism in the discharge of their duties, stating that any form of misconduct would be met with disciplinary measures.

While the three victims, including Mr Freeborn Ofeshohwo, are currently receiving medical attention for their life-threatening injuries, Chief Onosia James Obriki, the Otota of Idjerhe Kingdom, led the people of the area in condemning the incident. He appealed to the Inspector General of Police and the state commissioner of police to ensure that the officers responsible for the attack were arrested and prosecuted.

The arrest of the officers involved in the shooting comes after protests erupted across Idjerhe Kingdom, demanding justice for the victims. The community has called for a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to book and prevent similar incidents in the future.
