Arrest and Detention of Policemen Involved in Shooting of Vigilante Commander and Members in Delta State Confirmed

The Delta State Police Command has officially confirmed the arrest and detention of the policemen responsible for the shooting of a Vigilante Commander and two members of the Idjerhe Kingdom’s vigilante group. The incident, which occurred on the 30th of January, 2024, in Jesse town, has sparked public outcry and demands for justice.

In response to the public’s outrage, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, has condemned the shooting and assured the people of Idjerhe Kingdom that a thorough investigation will be conducted. The detained officers have been identified and detained, and internal disciplinary action has been initiated against them.

CP Olufemi, in a statement released by the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, emphasized that the Delta State Police Command does not condone any form of unprofessionalism or abuse of power. He stressed that the officers involved will be dealt with decisively in accordance with the law, to serve as a deterrent to others.

The Commissioner of Police has also warned all officers and men of the command to uphold the principles of professional policing and respect the rights of all citizens. Any officer found flouting the Force’s code of conduct will face appropriate disciplinary action.

Meanwhile, the three victims of the shooting, including the Vigilante Commander, Mr Freeborn Ofeshohwo alias Cornerstone, are currently receiving medical attention for their life-threatening injuries. The incident has triggered protests across Idjerhe Kingdom, with the Otota of Idjerhe Kingdom, Chief Onosia James Obriki, leading the charge for justice.

Chief Obriki, during the protest, appealed to the Inspector General of Police and the State Commissioner of Police to thoroughly investigate the shooting and ensure that the officers responsible are arrested and prosecuted.

As the investigation progresses, the people of Idjerhe Kingdom and the families of the injured vigilantes are urged to remain calm and have faith in the justice system. The Delta State Police Command is committed to ensuring that the truth is unraveled and that justice is served in this unfortunate incident..
