Delta State police Arrest Two Officers Accused of Shooting Vigilante Group Members

The Delta State Police Command has taken swift action in response to a disturbing incident that occurred in Jesse town on January 30, 2024. Two police officers have been arrested and detained for allegedly shooting the commander and two members of the Idjerhe Kingdom’s vigilante group.

The accused officers reportedly stormed Jesse town and targeted Mr. Freeborn Ofeshohwo, also known as Cornerstone, who served as the vigilante commander. In addition to Mr. Ofeshohwo, two other members of the group, Friday Johnson and Enor Young, were also injured in the incident.

The state commissioner of police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, has publicly condemned the shooting and assured the people of Idjerhe Kingdom that a thorough investigation will be conducted. In a statement released by the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, CP Olufemi emphasized the commitment of the command to ensure justice in this case.

The statement, titled “Re-Protest, Anger As Policemen Shoot Idjerhe Kingdom Vigilante Leaders And Two Others,” outlines the actions being taken. CP Olufemi has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department, to conduct a full-scale investigation into the incident. The officers involved have been identified, detained, and are facing internal disciplinary action.

The commissioner has made it clear that the Delta State Police Command does not condone any form of unprofessionalism or abuse of power. He has vowed to deal decisively with any officer found in violation of the Force’s code of conduct. CP Olufemi wants all officers to uphold the principles of professional policing and respect the rights of all citizens.

In the wake of the incident, protests erupted across Idjerhe Kingdom, with Chief Onosia James Obriki, the Otota of the Kingdom, leading the charge. Chief Obriki, along with the community, has called for a thorough investigation and the arrest and prosecution of the officers implicated in the shooting.

The three victims, Mr. Ofeshohwo, Mr. Johnson, and Mr. Young, are currently receiving medical treatment for their life-threatening injuries. The people of Idjerhe Kingdom are anxiously awaiting justice and hoping that this tragedy will serve as a deterrent to prevent similar incidents in the future.
