Kansas Marine identified as one of the five killed in helicopter crash

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The U.S. Marine Corps has confirmed that 21-year-old Lance Cpl. Donovan Davis, from Olathe, Kansas, was one of the five Marines who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash earlier this week. The incident occurred during a routine training mission in a remote snow-covered area of southern California.

The group of Marines, flying a CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter, were on their way from Nevada to California when the crash happened. The helicopter was assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, part of Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, based in Miramar, California.

Lance Cpl. Davis enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2019 and had recently been promoted to Lance Corporal. He was a highly decorated Marine, having earned the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and a Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

“Our top priority now is supporting the families of our fallen heroes, and we ask for your respect and understanding as they grieve,” said Lt. Col. Nicholas J. Harvey, commanding officer of HMH-361. “The Flying Tigers family stands strong and includes the friends and community who have supported our squadron during this challenging time. We will get through this together.”

Lance Cpl. Davis’ sacrifice has been recognized by local political figures as well. Sen. Jerry Moran expressed his condolences, stating, “Lance Cpl. Davis volunteered to serve his country, and at 21 years of age, he paid the ultimate sacrifice.”

Representative Sharice Davids, who represents Olathe, also expressed her condolences, saying, “My heart breaks for the Davis family and I hope we will keep them in our prayers as they grieve.”

Lance Cpl. Davis attended Blue Valley Southwest High School in Overland Park. The school district released a statement expressing their deep sadness and honoring his dedication, bravery, and service to the country.

This devastating incident serves as a reminder of the risks that our brave men and women in the military face every day. Lance Cpl. Davis and his fellow Marines will be remembered for their service and sacrifice.
