The Marine Corps has identified the five service members who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash in Southern California earlier this week. Lance Cpl. Donovan Davis, Sgt. Alec Langen, Capt. Benjamin Moulton, Capt. Jack Casey, and Capt. Miguel Nava died when their CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter went down during a routine training flight. The aircraft crashed near a mountainous area east of San Diego, about 80 miles from their intended destination of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

The Marines were flying from Creech Air Force Base in Nevada when the accident occurred. All three officers were pilots, while Davis and Langen served as crew chiefs. The Marine Corps has been in contact with the families of the deceased, providing support and assistance during this difficult time.
Family members of Sgt. Alec Langen spoke to Military.com and shared fond memories of the young Marine. Langen’s father described him as an intelligent and “goofy” young man who had always been fascinated by military structures, even building them out of Legos as a child. Langen’s sister expressed her admiration for her brother and the plans they had for the future. Langen had been married for just one month when he tragically lost his life.
Capt. Miguel Nava’s father also spoke to Military.com, describing his son as a driven individual who was committed to his family and his country. Nava had always dreamed of flying and found his opportunity in the Marine Corps after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy. Nava was awarded several medals during his time in the service.
The Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, also known as the “Flying Tigers,” mourns the loss of their fellow Marines. Lt. Col. Nicholas Harvey, commanding officer of HMH-361, expressed his condolences to the families and asked for respect and understanding during this difficult time.
