54 Arrested Over Courthouse Attack in Istanbul

A Turkish court has taken swift action in response to the armed attack that occurred in front of Istanbul’s main courthouse earlier this week. Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç announced on Saturday that 54 individuals out of the more than 100 people detained have been arrested in connection to the incident. Additionally, Tunç revealed that 48 of the detainees were released under judicial supervision.

The attack unfolded outside the Istanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan, where two gunmen opened fire on a police checkpoint. In response, police officers fatally shot the assailants, but not before a bystander named Dilfıraz Karataş was critically injured. Tragically, Karataş succumbed to her injuries at a hospital. A mother of two, she was laid to rest following prayers in Istanbul on Wednesday.

The attack also left five others injured, including three police officers, according to a statement from Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya. Yerlikaya revealed that the assailants, a man and a woman, were militants belonging to the far-left Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party/Front (DHKP/C).

This incident is currently under investigation by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. However, this is not the first time the DHKP/C has made headlines for its violent actions. In 2013, the group orchestrated a suicide bombing at the US Embassy in Ankara, resulting in the death of a Turkish security guard.

The DHKP/C, recognized as a terrorist organization by the United States, has long been engaged in a fight against American influence in the Middle East and beyond. In fact, in 2014, Washington issued a $3 million reward for information leading to the capture of the group’s leaders.

The arrest of 54 suspects provides a sense of justice and accountability for the attack on Istanbul’s main courthouse. As the investigation progresses, authorities will continue to work diligently to ensure that all those involved are held responsible for their actions..
