Man’s Body Found Floating in Hilo Harbor: Identity and Investigation Revealed

In a tragic incident that unfolded at Hilo Harbor on Friday morning, the lifeless body of a 73-year-old man was discovered floating in the water. The man has been identified as Dennis William Swain, a resident of Hilo.

The distressing discovery was made shortly after 8 a.m. when Hilo patrol officers and Hawaii Fire Department personnel responded to a report of a body floating face-down at the edge of the Hilo Pier, situated at 100 Kuhio St. With swift action, the responders located the body and carefully pulled it from the water onto the deck of the pier.

Swain was immediately transported to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was officially pronounced dead at 10:47 a.m. police Captain Rio Amon-Wilkins of the East Hawaii Criminal Investigation Division shared that he believes Swain’s body had been in the water for less than 24 hours. While there were some injuries, they were not indicative of foul play, according to Amon-Wilkins.

Further investigation into the incident suggests that Swain, who was known to be an avid fisherman, may not have entered the water at the location where his body was discovered. Amon-Wilkins speculated that Swain could have been fishing in another area of Hilo Bay and potentially ended up in the water there.

An autopsy has been scheduled for early next week to determine the exact cause of Swain’s death. The case has been classified as a coroner’s inquest, highlighting the need for a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding his passing.
