Residents of the Pownal Estates Mobile Home Park in Pownal, Vt., have been living in fear for years due to the presence of drugs, gangs, and violence within their small community. The situation reached a horrifying peak on Tuesday when a man was fatally stabbed multiple times in the abdomen and chest.

The victim, identified as 36-year-old Casey Gras from Bennington, entered the property of Missy Chandler and her boyfriend before the attack occurred. Witnesses reported hearing Gras screaming for help as he ran out of the residence and collapsed in the road. This distressing scene unfolded just as neighborhood children were returning home from school.
One neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed deep concern for the safety of their school-age grandchildren, who live just a few feet away from where Gras fell. They spoke of the rampant drug activity in the area, stating, “I can’t really tell you who’s who. I’m in constant fear for my grandchildren’s lives.”
Eyewitnesses provided conflicting accounts of the incident. Some claimed that a second individual exited the trailer and fled in a blue or gray Subaru Crosstrek or Toyota hatchback, while others suggested that Gras and another person were in the vehicle together when the altercation occurred. Regardless, Gras, severely injured and covered in blood, managed to run across the yard and bang on the window of a passing car for help. Sadly, the driver ignored his pleas.
Emergency medical services arrived at the scene shortly after and attempted to save Gras, but he was declared dead approximately 15 minutes later.

The Pownal Estates Mobile Home Park has been plagued by drugs and violence for years, with residents feeling helpless and ignored by park management. Chuck Osgood, a long-time resident, expressed frustration with the lack of responsiveness to safety concerns, stating that having a present park manager would make a significant difference in resolving these issues.
As the investigation into the homicide continues, the community remains on edge. The tragic incident has highlighted the pervasive drug problem in the region, with one neighbor stating, “It’s hard. I know it’s all over. I mean, Bennington is hitting the same thing. Drugs are all over. It’s just that everybody knows everybody else here, making it a lot harder.”
