Sgt. Alec Langen, a 23-year-old Marine who recently tied the knot, has been identified as one of the five Marines who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash in California. The CH-533 helicopter went down in the mountains outside of San Diego, according to his mother, Caryn Langen.

Langen, who followed in his father’s footsteps by joining the Marines, served as the Crew Chief during the ill-fated flight. His family revealed that he had just gotten married in January, although they did not disclose the identity of his bride.

Langen’s lifelong dream was to become a Marine, inspired by his father’s service. “Ever since he was three, he was like, ‘I want to do what daddy did,'” his father, Steven Langen, said. “Being a Marine to Alec was everything. He idolized his father.”

The remaining four Marines who perished in the crash have not yet been publicly identified. The group was returning to the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego from the Creech Air Force Base in Las Vegas when the tragic incident occurred.

Maj. Gen. Michael J. Borgschulte, the commanding general of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, expressed his condolences and shared that an investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing. The victims’ remains are currently being guarded by fellow Marines.

Governor Gavin Newsom extended his sympathies, stating that “California joins the nation in mourning the tremendous loss of these Marines.” He emphasized their dedication to serving the country, which will always be remembered.

Efforts to recover the remains of the fallen Marines continue, along with the investigation into the crash. First responders confirmed the deaths of the five Marines after locating the wreckage near Pine Valley, approximately an hour away from San Diego.
