Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 10 (IANS) – The Kerala government has announced a compensation of Rs one million and a job for the family of a man who tragically lost his life after being trampled by a wild elephant. The decision comes in response to the massive protest by locals following the incident.

State Forest Minister A. K. Saseendran, addressing the media, urged for calm and understanding in the wake of this unfortunate incident. He stated, “The state will provide Rs one million and a government job to the victim’s family. We empathize with the sentiments of the people.”

The victim, identified as Ajeesh, was a 42-year-old taxi driver. The incident occurred near Mananthavady at around 7 a.m., triggering widespread anger among the locals. They blocked roads and even prevented the vehicle of the Superintendent of police (SP) from moving forward. The SP was forced to walk to the Mananthavady Medical College, where Ajeesh’s body was kept.

The protesting locals have criticized the local legislator for allegedly failing to protect them from wild animals. Reports suggest that the wild elephant responsible for the attack had a radio collar, which was put on by Karnataka forest officials. However, the elephant had crossed over to the Kerala forests and entered the residential areas of Manathavady.

Congress Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi expressed his shock and grief over Ajeesh’s untimely demise. Taking to his social media account, Rahul stated, “Another life has been tragically lost in Wayanad due to a wildlife attack. He was the sole breadwinner of his family and the primary caregiver to his mother. My heart goes out to his family, especially his ailing mother and young children.”

Rahul highlighted the increasing instances of human-animal conflict in Wayanad and the detrimental impact it has had on the lives and livelihoods of the people. He called for comprehensive action from the Central and State governments to address this issue and protect both the communities and the wildlife of the region.

In conclusion, the Kerala government’s decision to provide compensation and a job to the family of the deceased aims to alleviate the suffering caused by this tragic incident. The incident has sparked widespread protests and demands for better protection against wild animal attacks in the Wayanad region. The authorities are taking steps to tranquilize and relocate the wild elephant to prevent further conflicts and ensure the safety of the community..
