Massachusetts Governor Pays Tribute to Navy SEAL from Westfield

The brave actions of Navy Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Christopher J. Chambers, a native of Westfield, Massachusetts, during a mission in the Arabian Sea have been commended by the governor. Sadly, Chambers lost his life while attempting to rescue a fellow SEAL.

The mission, which took place on January 11, aimed to seize Iranian-made weapons from an unflagged ship headed for Yemen, according to U.S. officials familiar with the incident. During the raid, Chambers jumped into the sea to save a teammate who had fallen under the waves while trying to board the ship.

Despite an extensive 11-day search and rescue operation, both SEALs were declared missing and the mission transitioned into a recovery effort. On Monday, the Navy released the names of the two fallen heroes, with the second SEAL identified as Navy Special Warfare Operator 2nd Class Nathan Gage Ingram.

Chambers, aged 37, joined the Navy in 2012 and successfully completed SEAL training in 2014. His dedication and sacrifice have not gone unnoticed, as Governor Maura Healey expressed her condolences and admiration for Chambers’ selflessness.

In a statement, Governor Healey said, “My deepest sympathies go out to the family, friends, and shipmates of Special Operator Chris Chambers, who lost his life while selflessly trying to save his teammate off the coast of East Africa. In his heroic life and tragic passing, we recognize the ultimate example of the sacrifice that every servicemember and veteran has offered on behalf of our country.”

The governor also emphasized the importance of honoring Chambers’ sacrifice and pledged to take actions that reflect this commitment. She extended her thoughts to the Westfield community and everyone who knew Chambers, as Massachusetts mourns another tragic loss.

Central Command reported that both men were part of a team that successfully boarded the ship and seized a variety of Iranian-made weaponry, while facing off against 12 crew members. The bravery and dedication displayed by Chambers and Ingram serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by servicemembers in the defense of their country.
