American Rape Suspect Accused of Faking Death Refuses to Appear in Court

An American man, Nicholas Rossi, who is suspected of rape and is accused of faking his own death to avoid charges, has refused to appear at his latest court hearing. This shocking development comes after a two-year legal battle during which Rossi claimed to be a victim of mistaken identity.

Rossi, who was flown out of Edinburgh earlier this month, appeared in court in the US for the first time since his extradition from Scotland on January 17. Maintaining his innocence, he insisted that he is actually an Irish orphan named Arthur Knight.

However, on Monday, Judge Derek Pullan of Utah’s Fourth District Court was informed that Rossi would not be appearing via video link from prison. As a result, a new court date of February 6 has been set for his appearance. Judge Pullan made it clear that if Rossi is not ill on that date, he will authorize reasonable force to compel his attendance.

The 36-year-old suspect had previously appeared via video link at the Third District Court in Utah. His case came to the attention of authorities when he was identified at the Queen Elizabeth university Hospital in Glasgow in December 2021, where he was receiving treatment for Covid-19 under the name Arthur Knight. He was arrested after his distinctive tattoos gave him away.

After months of court proceedings in Edinburgh, Sheriff Norman McFadyen ruled in November 2022 that the man claiming to be Arthur Knight was indeed Nicholas Rossi, the individual wanted for extradition by US authorities. An extradition hearing took place in June 2023, and Sheriff McFadyen determined that there were no barriers to Rossi’s extradition.

Prosecutors in Utah have charged Rossi with raping a 21-year-old woman in 2008. The delay in identifying him as a suspect was due to a backlog of DNA test kits at the state’s crime lab.

As this case continues to unfold, the court awaits Rossi’s appearance and the opportunity to hear his side of the story. It remains to be seen how this complex legal battle will ultimately be resolved..
