Illegal Arms Dealer arrested in Rajasthan Turns Out to be Absconding Murderer

An illegal arms dealer, who was apprehended by the Udaipur police’s special task force on Sunday, has been revealed to be an absconding suspect in the murder of a woman from Rajsamand two years ago. The accused, identified as Rahul Raj Chaturvedi, aged 40, was arrested from Udaipur’s Pratap Nagar area, and a pistol was seized from his possession. However, during the investigation, it was discovered that Chaturvedi had been evading the law in an elopement case for the past four years. Shockingly, he also confessed to the murder of the woman.

According to Bhuvan Bhushan, the district police superintendent, Chaturvedi, a resident of Udaipur’s Keshav Nagar, had eloped with a married woman named Bhanu Priya Goswami from Rajsamand in 2019. A complaint had been lodged against him by one of Goswami’s relatives, but the police were unable to locate him at the time. The tragic incident occurred in 2021, when Chaturvedi allegedly smothered Goswami to death following a heated argument. To dispose of the body, Chaturvedi meticulously planned his actions by watching over 1,300 episodes of a popular crime television series.

After committing the murder, he placed Goswami’s body in a drum and filled it with a mixture of cement and chemicals to prevent decomposition and conceal the smell. The body remained hidden in a room for several years until Chaturvedi’s return in 2022, when the landlord discovered the leakage from the drum and learned about the murder. Astonishingly, the landlord agreed to help Chaturvedi secretly cremate the body and dispose of the remains in a water body, keeping the matter hidden from everyone.

Chaturvedi’s arrest came about when the Udaipur police received a tip-off regarding his involvement in an illegal weapons deal. He was apprehended at a check post in the area, and it was during his interrogation at the Dhanmandi police station that a constable, who had been involved in the elopement case in Rajsamand, identified him as the suspect. As a result, the murder case was brought to light.

The police have filed fresh charges against Chaturvedi under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and 3/25 of the Arms Act. The investigation is ongoing, and the landlord’s potential involvement in the matter is also being looked into. The authorities have assured that necessary action will be taken against him if evidence of his complicity is found.
