Tragic Loss of Virginia Pennington: Remains Identified

The incident, which occurred on July 28, 2023, also claimed the life of Hardy Harris Jr., a 49-year-old who was staying with Pennington in a cabin on Wolf Creek in Franklin County.

Sadly, it was a property owner who stumbled upon a human skull on his land along the Whitewater River on January 16. The Dearborn County Sheriff’s Office was immediately alerted and upon arrival, deputies discovered more bone remains in a debris pile that had been caused by the flooding.

Despite challenging weather conditions, detectives returned the following day to collect the remaining bone fragments. The Dearborn County Coroner then transported the remains to the Hamilton County Mortuary. Through a meticulous scientific process that involved comparing medical records and X-rays, the Hamilton County Coroner’s Office was able to positively identify the skeletal remains as those of Virginia Pennington. The distance between the location where Pennington’s remains were found and where she was swept away by floodwaters is approximately 19 and a half miles.
