Considered one of the most notorious and prolific serial killers in US history, Richard Ramirez terrorized the streets of California in 1985. Known as the Night Stalker, Ramirez was not only a serial killer but also a rapist and burglar. His reign of terror gripped the state, as residents were warned to stay safe during the nights.

During his killing spree, Ramirez claimed the lives of at least 14 people. He gained his chilling moniker due to his method of operation, which involved breaking into homes and assaulting his victims. Ramirez would rape and murder his victims before leaving behind satanic symbols and signs at the crime scenes, creating an atmosphere of fear and suspicion.
One of Ramirez’s earliest known victims was 79-year-old Jennie Vincow, whom he sexually assaulted and murdered in her own home in 1984. Just months later, Ramirez targeted 22-year-old Maria Hernandez, opening fire on her and killing her roommate and a driver who were with her at the time.
The Night Stalker’s brutal attacks continued, with the murder of middle-aged couple Vincent and Maxine Zazzara. Ramirez left a horrifying scene, carving an inverted crucifix on Maxine’s chest and placing her eyeballs in a jewelry box. It was a gruesome display that shocked the nation.
In May of the same year, Ramirez attacked Bill and Lillian Doi in their home, sexually assaulting Lillian and fatally shooting Bill. Days later, sisters Mabel “Ma” Bell and Florence “Nettie” Lang were found dead, adding to the growing list of victims.

The Night Stalker’s reign of terror finally came to an end on August 31, 1985, when authorities captured him. Through the use of fingerprints and footprints left at the crime scenes, as well as stolen cars, investigators were able to track down Ramirez and bring him to justice.
During his trial, Ramirez pleaded not guilty, but he was eventually convicted of 13 counts of murder, 11 sexual assaults, five attempted murders, and 14 burglaries. He was sentenced to death in the gas chamber on November 7, 1989, and spent the rest of his life in California’s San Quentin State Prison.
Richard Ramirez’s life was marked by a troubled upbringing. In 1973, he witnessed his father kill his mother, with his father later being found not guilty by reason of insanity. Ramirez’s involvement with drugs, cults, and satanic ideas further shaped his descent into darkness.
The Night Stalker’s first known victim was Mei Leung, a nine-year-old girl whom he raped and killed in a San Francisco apartment basement. The case wasn’t conclusively tied to Ramirez until 2009, more than two decades later.
