Police Officer in Narammala Shoots Driver, Acting Recklessly
In a shocking turn of events, a police officer in Narammala, Sri Lanka, has been accused of acting recklessly and contrary to police directives, resulting in the tragic death of a lorry driver. According to Senior Superintendent of Police Attorney Nihal Thalduwa, a special investigation unit has been deployed to Narammala to look into the incident. The officer involved, a Sub-Inspector, has been arrested and is currently under detention pending further investigation.
The incident unfolded when two plainclothes police officers attempted to pull over a small lorry in Narammala. However, the driver allegedly ignored their instructions and attempted to flee, leading to a pursuit by the officers on a motorcycle. The chase finally came to an end in Dampalassa, where the lorry was stopped.
During the inspection of the vehicle, the Sub-Inspector’s firearm accidentally discharged, striking and fatally injuring the 40-year-old driver, who has been identified as a resident of Alawwa. The driver’s death has sparked protests outside the Narammala Police Station, requiring the intervention of the Police Special Task Force to restore order.
Acting Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon has assured swift action, stating that stern measures will be taken against those responsible once the investigation is complete. He has also appointed an investigation team, headed by an Assistant Superintendent of Police, to look into the matter.
