According to the preliminary investigation conducted by KSP, Deputy Nick Spears of the MCSO was on routine patrol at around 4:30 a.m. when he noticed suspicious activity at a residential construction site in Benton. While Ross was receiving medical attention, KSP obtained a warrant for his arrest. After being discharged from the hospital, Ross was taken into custody and charged with attempted murder of a police officer, being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun, and theft by unlawful taking.

Kevin M. Sorensen, who was found in the driver’s seat of the pickup truck at the time of the incident, was also arrested and initially charged with first-degree burglary. However, the charge was later amended to theft by unlawful taking.

Both Ross and Spears have waived their right to a preliminary hearing and a presentation of their cases to a grand jury. They are now scheduled to be arraigned in Marshall County Circuit Court on Tuesday, February 13th.
