Death Toll Rises to 10 in Monkayo, Davao de Oro Landslide Tragedy

The death toll from the devastating landslide that occurred in Monkayo, Davao de Oro has tragically increased to 10, as another body was recovered on Friday afternoon. The municipal government confirmed the sad news, revealing that victim Elvira Saldua was found and brought to safety at 1:31 p.m.

This heartbreaking occurrence follows the earlier recovery of two other victims. Ritchell Reboldad was discovered at 11:30 a.m., while Agnes Bitoon was recovered at 12:23 p.m. The identities of the deceased have been released, allowing their loved ones to grieve and remember them. The victims are Catherine Gumatin (27 years old), Hannah Gumatin (9), Dysna Gumatin (3), Arjay Gumatin (1), Cristelle Gumatin (10), Ailee Gumatin (8), Marjomie Nenaria (33), Ritchell Reboldad (35), Agnes Bitoon (44), and Elvera Saldua (35).

Despite the tireless efforts of the search, rescue, and retrieval operation team, one person is still missing. Rommel Gumatin, 45, is yet to be found. The community continues to hope and pray for his safe return.

Amidst the tragedy, there was a glimmer of hope as one-year-old Amara Kate Delola survived the landslide but sustained injuries. She was immediately rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

The victims were attending a prayer worship session at a home in Purok 19, Pagasa in Barangay Mt. Diwata when the landslide struck, burying them under the weight of the earth. The incident has left the community devastated and mourning the loss of their loved ones.

According to Fe Maestre, the chief of the Davao de Oro public information office, the province has experienced a total of 73 flooding and landslide incidents. This recent tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by extreme weather conditions.

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) reported that a staggering 270,206 people, equivalent to 70,862 families, in the Davao Region have been affected by the adverse weather conditions caused by a shear line. Approximately 36,000 individuals have been displaced from their homes, with 14,921 people taking refuge in evacuation centers and 21,870 others seeking shelter elsewhere.

This devastating event has highlighted the urgent need for preparedness and disaster management strategies in the region. As the community mourns the loss of their loved ones, efforts are being made to provide support and assistance to those affected by this tragic incident.
