A Man Charged with Murder for Allegedly Killing His Coworker at a Storage Facility

A man has been charged with murder after allegedly killing his coworker at a storage facility in Salt Lake City, Utah. The suspect, Nathan David Evans, reportedly attacked his coworker, David Hinkebein, because he believed Hinkebein had “messed with his stuff.” The incident took place on December 29, 2023, and the investigation into Hinkebein’s death is still ongoing.

According to authorities, the incident began when a driver overheard Evans telling someone in his vehicle that he was going to the warehouse to “bash someone’s head in.” It was later discovered that Evans was referring to Hinkebein, whom he believed had tampered with his belongings. This conversation was reported to the Salt Lake County District Attorney, Sim Gill.

On January 1, 2024, a coworker returned to the storage facility and noticed that Hinkebein was missing. Suspicious, the coworker investigated further and found bloody handprints on the wall and a blood-stained carpet in a back office. When confronted about the mess, Evans refused to discuss it, raising more suspicions.

The following day, the coworker discovered that the mess had not been cleaned up and confronted Evans once again. Evans simply replied that “Hinkebein was done,” indicating that something terrible had happened to him. Concerned for Hinkebein’s welfare, the coworker reported the situation to the authorities.

Police conducted a welfare check on January 3 and discovered a large amount of blood and Hinkebein’s lifeless body. A hammer, identified as the murder weapon, was found next to a minifridge with blood and hair matching Evans’ appearance. Clothing worn by Evans, covered in blood, was also discovered.

Evans has been charged with first-degree felony murder and third-degree felony abuse or desecration of a human body. Workplace violence is taken seriously, and the district attorney’s office intends to prosecute Evans to the fullest extent of the law. The investigation into Hinkebein’s death is ongoing, and no trial date has been set yet.
