India Ready to Assist Canada in Extortion Investigation, Requires Formal Request and Evidence
India’s High Commissioner to Ottawa, Sanjay Kumar Verma, has expressed India’s willingness to assist in the investigation of gangs operating in India and their alleged involvement in extortion activities targeting Indo-Canadians. However, India has made it clear that a formal request from Canada, along with concrete evidence, is necessary for them to take appropriate action.

The statement comes in the wake of ongoing investigations by the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) in Canada, which believes that these crimes, including 27 cases of extortion, are being orchestrated from India. The EPS has been investigating this “extortion series” since October of last year, which includes cases of extortions, arsons, and firearms offenses.
At a press conference, EPS Staff Sgt Dave Paton revealed that the victims in these cases were typically targeted through WhatsApp communication, followed by requests for compensation to ensure their safety. While no injuries have been reported as a result of these violent tactics, the total property damage is estimated to be around CA$9 million.
Despite these developments, Canada has yet to formally approach Indian authorities concerning the matter. Verma emphasized that there are already existing mechanisms in place for cooperation on organized crime between the two governments. However, he stressed the need for specific and relevant evidence, rather than unsubstantiated allegations, to take any action.
In response to the ongoing investigation, six individuals have been arrested so far, including Parminder Singh, who faces 12 firearms-related charges, and Hassan Dembil, Manav Heer, and Ravinder Sandu, who were charged with arson-related offenses. Arjun Sahnan, who faces five firearms-related charges, was also arrested but has since been released. One suspect has left Canada, but their identity has not been disclosed.

Similar extortion attempts have also been reported in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia and the Greater Toronto Area since late last year, indicating a concerning trend of organized crime targeting the Indo-Canadian community.
India’s offer to assist Canada in this investigation highlights the importance of international cooperation in combating organized crime. As the investigation progresses, it remains to be seen whether a formal request will be made by Canadian authorities, backed by the necessary evidence to initiate collaboration between the two countries..
