Man Arrested for Armed Robbery at La Puente Convenience Store

A 48-year-old man from La Puente was apprehended earlier this week when a police officer coincidentally walked into a convenience store while the man was in the act of robbing the clerk. The incident, captured on the store’s security cameras, occurred on January 17, according to the West Covina Police Department.

The suspect, later identified as Ramon Gonzalez, entered a local 7-Eleven convenience store and asked the clerk to grab him a pack of cigarettes. As the employee was placing the cigarettes into a plastic bag, Gonzalez lifted his sweatshirt, revealing a firearm, and demanded the clerk open the register. Fearfully, the employee complied and started placing money into the bag.

Just as Gonzalez was preparing to leave, Sergeant Hernandez of the West Covina Police Department casually strolled into the 7-Eleven. The employee, aware of the ongoing robbery, alerted Sgt. Hernandez, who reacted swiftly. Drawing his service weapon, Sgt. Hernandez chased the suspect as he attempted to flee the store.

Gonzalez was apprehended and upon searching him, authorities discovered a loaded firearm and approximately $400 stolen from the 7-Eleven. The 48-year-old was taken into custody and now faces charges of robbery, felon in possession of a firearm, and carrying a concealed weapon.

This incident marks the second time in less than a week that a uniformed law enforcement officer unknowingly walked into a 7-Eleven store in Los Angeles County while an armed robbery was taking place. On January 13, cameras at a 7-Eleven in Carson captured Deputy Luis Cisneros of the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department entering the store just as four armed suspects were attempting to rob two clerks at gunpoint.

Authorities have not confirmed if the recent rash of robberies at 7-Eleven stores across Los Angeles and Long Beach are related. Investigations are ongoing.
