Serial Killer Investigation Update: Major Announcement Planned
RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) — Prosecutors have revealed that a major announcement is imminent in the ongoing investigation of the suspected serial murders of a group of women whose bodies were discovered along a coastal highway near Long Island’s Gilgo Beach.
The prime suspect in some of these killings, Rex Heuermann, is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, following his previous charges in the deaths of three women. Prosecutors have indicated their intention to bring an additional murder charge against him.

Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney is expected to make the announcement after a court hearing in Riverhead, New York.
Heuermann, a 60-year-old architect, was arrested in July and charged with the killings of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello. Their bodies were discovered buried along a remote beach parkway. Authorities also suspect Heuermann’s involvement in the disappearance and death of Maureen Brainard-Barnes in 2007.
He has maintained his innocence and has been held without bail at Suffolk County Jail in Riverhead.
A Decade-Long Investigation
These arrests come more than ten years after the shocking discovery of ten sets of human remains, hidden in the dense underbrush near Gilgo Beach, during the search for a missing woman.

The unsolved murders have captivated the public’s attention, both on Long Island and beyond, with the notorious case even inspiring the creation of the 2020 Netflix film “Lost Girls.” While authorities suspect a serial killer may be responsible for some of the slayings, they do not believe that all the victims were killed by the same person.
Building the Case Against Heuermann
In 2022, detectives identified Rex Heuermann as a suspect when they linked him to a pickup truck seen by a witness at the time of one of the victims’ disappearance.
The following year, investigators tailing Heuermann managed to recover his DNA from a discarded pizza crust found in a Manhattan trash can. This DNA sample matched a hair found on a restraint used in the killings, further strengthening the case against him.
Prior to his arrest, Heuermann had worked as a licensed architect for a Manhattan-based firm and resided in Massapequa Park, a suburb near the location where the victims’ bodies were discovered.
The upcoming announcement by District Attorney Ray Tierney is eagerly anticipated, as it may shed new light on this long-standing investigation and bring closure to the families of the victims.
